Innovative companies in Europe are to receive more than 1.7 billion euros from the EU budget this year. The money from the European Innovation Council (EIC) is intended to help companies grow and open up new markets, the EU Commission announced on Wednesday. As examples, the Brussels authority cited areas such as quantum informatics, batteries and gene therapy. How much of the support will be disbursed as grants and how much as a loan has not yet been determined, according to the Commission.

In addition, more support should be given to women’s achievements, said Marija Gabriel, Eu Commissioner for Innovation and Research. For example, an index is to be developed through which politicians, investors or customers can see how well gender equality is doing.

500 million euros against climate change

A large part of this year’s budget – more than 500 million euros – is for the development of technologies in the fight against climate change, according to the communication. The EIC was launched in March 2021. A budget of ten billion euros is planned for the period from 2021 to 2027. (dpa-AFX/gem)
