A Tesla car shot into space has already been on the road in the solar system for four years – if there is anything left of the sports car at all. It orbits the Sun and is currently moving towards Mars at 25,000 to 30,000 kilometers per hour. From Earth, the roadster is over 375 million kilometers away, more than 20 light minutes. The information goes back to the private and often quoted page “Whereisroadster.com”, which permanently calculates the route of the car. The car was launched into space on February 6, 2018.
However, the website cannot say anything about whether the roadster in the color midnight sketch, which was once shot into space by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, still exists. The car is exposed to extreme radiation in space – especially organic substances such as leather, rubber and paint could be a thing of the past. What would remain would be the aluminum frame of Musk’s old sports car.
“Starman” is at the wheel
The background of the Tesla in space is a PR campaign by Musk, who is not only head of the car manufacturer, but also of the private space company SpaceX. When their rocket “Falcon Heavy” had to be tested, Musk parted with his convertible and made it a test charge. The human-sized doll “Starman”, named after a song by David Bowie, was mounted on the driver’s seat. A built-in device played another Bowie classic in an endless loop until the battery ran out: “Space Oddity”. (dpa/mer)
