The car manufacturer Opel wants to offer each of its models as an electric car in two years and invest in significantly longer ranges of its battery vehicles. Customers would get from 2024 for every Opel model an electrified offer, said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz of the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Friday). “Thanks to the framework conditions set by politicians, it is now clear in Europe that combustion engines have an expiry date.” At least in Europe, Opel will no longer sell combustion engines from 2028.
In particular, the manufacturer wants to increase the range and speed of charging its electric models. “We are working on ensuring that an Opel can be charged for 32 kilometers in one minute,” said Hochgeschurtz. “I expect this to be the case at Opel in the middle of the decade,” he announced. “For the future, we are also aiming for ranges of 500 to 800 kilometers, depending on the car.”
In view of the chip crisis, the carmaker is already preferring electric cars in production. “We deliver electric cars faster than combustion engines, so we primarily serve electrically powered vehicles with chips,” said Hochgeschurtz. Opel wants to contribute to increasing the number of electric cars in Germany and Europe.
Manta returns as an electric car
As a special model, the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker wants to resurrect its cult model Manta as an electric model more than three decades after the end of production. “We want to revive the Manta in the middle of this decade as a pure electric car,” announced the Opel boss. “It will be a fascinating reinterpretation with a sensational amount of space – of course significantly larger than the original Manta from 1970.”
Opel is the only German brand in the car company Stellantis, which emerged from peugeot’s parent company PSA and Fiat-Chrysler. (dpa/swi)
