The lack of semiconductors and other components has had an impact on employment in the German automotive industry. At the end of last year, 2.1 percent fewer people were employed in the larger companies in the sector than a year earlier, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. This, together with metal processing, was the worst value within the manufacturing sector.
There was an increase in the number of employees in chemistry, in the production of electronic and optical devices as well as in the production of food and animal feed (plus 4.3 percent). Here, however, the special effect was that in 2021 temporary employment contracts were converted into permanent jobs at many slaughter stations and are now statistically no longer managed as a service, but as industrial jobs.
Significantly fewer employees
The bottom line is that in 2021 the number of employees in companies with more than 50 people fell by 0.3 percent to 5.5 million people compared to the previous year. Compared to the pre-crisis year 2019, there were even 3.0 percent fewer people in industry at the end of the year. (dpa/gem)
