Hypnospace Outlaw is a different kind of game.
In February, Game Pass launched with titles like Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, telling read and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 properly filled – however, subscribers also have to say goodbye to a few games. And with Hypnospace Outlaw Perhaps the most bizarre game in the subscription lineup is leaving Game Pass indefinitely on February 28, 2022.

That’s what it’s about: Do you remember what the internet was like in the late 1990s? No? All the better, because at its core, Hypnospace Outlaw is a bizarre simulation of a fictional internet. Here you’ll browse amateurishly cobbled together websites filled with low-resolution JPEGs and oddly animated GIFs. And in this 56k paradise you are active as a moderator to uncover cyber crimes.
However, the eponymous Hypnospace is not a classic Internet, but a digital space that paying subscribers can visit in their sleep with the help of a headband. While the body rests, the mind goes surfing and clicking through social networks, online stores and private homepages – always authentic and always completely crazy. On behalf of the manufacturer Merchantsoft, you then ensure order so that the launch of the new Hypnospace version can be prepared.
The gameplay imitates the use of the hypnospace almost perfectly. In the context of a virtual operating system reminiscent of Windows 98, you click on icons on the desktop to, for example, open the browser, change the wallpaper or start the music player and let downloaded songs play in the background. The “90s Internet” vibe is beautifully captured, including colourful, wobbly writing in countless fonts.

It is incredibly fun to deal with the digital interface and explore the Hypnospace. The quasi-Internet is credibly staged and the different websites and users are linked to each other. This makes the digital detective work all the more exciting, for example if you are looking for possible copyright infringements because someone is illegally hosting pictures of a cartoon duck on their own blog.
The game’s story unfolds in your inbox, where you regularly receive orders to search Hypnospace for specific cyber crimes. Gradually you will learn more about the background of the platform, while at the same time gaining access to more “Zones” that are divided by topic. Some are conservative, some only for teenagers, other zones are full of esoterics who offer questionable cures for sale.
To beat Hypnospace Outlaw, you should about 10 hours plan – quite feasible until the exclusion from the Xbox Game Pass on February 28, 2022.
