Young people and millennials prefer to gamble on smartphones

A survey of gaming behavior in the US has provided an interesting finding. Apparently, most millennial and Gen Z gamers are fans of mobile games on smartphones. Here on MeinMMO you can find out exactly how the numbers are, why that could be and what that means for gaming!

What is this study? The analysis company Tapjoy (via Tapjoy), which deals with mobile games, has published a survey report. It mainly dealt with the gaming habits of the current generation of parents in the USA, i.e. millennials born between 1981 and 1996. 5,498 people were surveyed.

How are the results? In summary, the survey finds the following for Millennials’ primary gaming platforms:

  • 90 percent of respondents play on smartphones
  • 31 percent also use consoles and handhelds
  • 23 percent gamble on the PC

The numbers stem from the fact that various players use several platforms and were not asked about the sole platform.

According to the study, this puts them quite close to the gaming behavior of the next generation, the young people of Generation Z.

According to the study, 64 percent of eligible players gamble “very often” on their cell phones. For Generation Z it is 62 percent.

What is the reason for the widespread use of mobile games?

What are the reasons? According to Tapjoy, the proliferation of mobile games among these two generations is due to the fact that millennials and members of Generation Z are both very tech-savvy and smartphones are widespread and used excessively.

You have a unique perspective: you remember life before the internet, but you also can’t imagine life without the internet. And they are just as tech-savvy and dependent on their mobile devices as Gen Z, especially when it comes to gaming and shopping.

What is playing? According to Tapjoy, Free2Play games that they have seen either in funny advertising banners or with friends are particularly popular. The most popular genres are:

  • Action and adventure games
  • Puzzles and Match 3
  • role playing
  • word puzzle
  • battle royale

The latter genre in particular is very popular with games like CoD Mobile, Fortnite and PUBG Mobile.

How does the corona pandemic play into this? According to Tapjoy, the corona pandemic seems to have further increased mobile gaming behavior. 73% of respondents said they are playing more mobile games due to the pandemic. 59% had downloaded new gaming apps at the time of the survey, and 60% claim they will continue their new gaming habit after the pandemic may subside.

Incidentally, this millennial parent generation also includes MeinMMO author Jürgen Horn, who also has a penchant for mobile games like Moonlight Sculptor or the new one Marvel Future Revolution has developed. Because for a round on the cell phone you don’t have to go into the room with the computer and you can play a bit anytime and anywhere if you have time.

What could all this mean for the future? The high popularity of mobile games leads to the conclusion that games on smartphones will continue to play an ever-increasing role in gaming in the foreseeable future. Mobile games have long since ceased to be just casual puzzle games, but increasingly complex graphic bangers that can hardly be distinguished from games on consoles or PCs.

In addition, there are smartphones that are becoming more and more suitable for gaming, such as the new folding phones, which also offer more gaming comfort with particularly large screens. There are also useful gadgets such as special controllerswith which you can turn a standard smartphone into a kind of switch.

Furthermore, more and more large studios are pushing their AAA titles into the mobile segment. Including the upcoming Diablo Immortal or the planned mobile version of the Battle Royale hit Apex Legends. And maybe someday we’ll see a high-quality mobile version of WoW as well.

So much for Tapjoy’s study of mobile gaming among Millennials and Gen Z. Are you big mobile fans too, or are you out of line because mobile games don’t appeal to you at all? Let us know in the comments.
