Salvador (dpa) – traditional club Atlético Mineiro has won the Brazilian soccer championship for the first time in 50 years.
The club defeated on Thursday evening in the Arena Fonte Nova in Salavador – led by the former Brazilian international Hulk – Bahia after 0-2 deficit with 3-2 (0-0). This puts Atlético-MG (81 points) unassailable in front of the second-placed defending champion Flamengo Rio de Janeiro (70) – the team still has three games.
Atlético-MG had turned the game in Salvador in the second half after falling 2-0 down. It all started with Hulk: The 35-year-old, who also leads the scorer list with 18 goals, converted a penalty in the 73rd minute. Then keno hit two times. Previously, Luiz Otavio (62nd) and Gilberto (66th) had put Bahia, who is fighting relegation, in the lead.
