Apple | 14″ MacBook Pro in review: Apple’s best notebook to date | macbook

The sum of the small differences is enormous

But something else is also noticeable in everyday use: Although the performance advantage over a half as expensive MacBook Air with an M1 chip is irrelevant, we still preferred the new MacBook Pro. And that is due to the many changes mentioned at the beginning.

The display is simply a stunner: at 120 Hz, it scrolls much softer than all other MacBooks, and thanks to mini-LEDs, it shines brighter than ever. HDR content such as films or photos from newer iPhones simply look better on it.

The speakers are also in a class of their own: other Apple notebooks don’t have such a full and spatial sound – and in our experience, no other manufacturer either. It is possible to watch a film in the evening or listen to music in the home office.

In fact, there were always situations in which the more expensive MacBook played in the foreground over the cheaper devices:

Transfer photos from the old SLR camera – no problem, just insert the SD card. Starting a presentation on the large TV in the meeting room works without an adapter directly via the HDMI cable on the device – since there are only USB-C ports, you can’t do without an adapter entirely.

And if you want, you can finally connect more than one external display to the device without software and adapters, which is particularly practical in office and home office use. Here the simple M1 chip is limited. This also works with the help of docking stations, but with the M1 Pro and M1 Max, two or even four 5K displays can also be controlled via different USB-C cables.

The MacBook was not charged before a long car ride (as a passenger)? Thanks to fast charging, the battery is half full after just one hour of charging – that’s enough for several hours of demanding work. In addition, the MagSafe connector provides a much better feeling when you quickly plug the device in somewhere and the cable runs across the floor.

By the way: The textile-coated MagSafe cable ends in a USB-C connector on the charger. In the event of a cable damage, the entire charging part does not have to be replaced as it used to, but actually only the cable. And the charger can also be used to charge other devices with a USB-C cable – very practical when travelling.
