While the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro (from 1,970 euros on Amazon) are expected to receive only a modest upgrade this year, customers can expect a more substantial upgrade in 2025, according to a report from Bloomberg. Because in three years, the pro laptops should finally get a touchscreen.
This step is surprising because Apple founder Steve Jobs vehemently opposed touch-sensitive screens in notebooks until recently because the ergonomics simply wouldn’t work. This attitude has been shared by the current CEO, Tim Cook, for the past few years. After almost all competitors offer laptops with a touchscreen, Apple should finally give in. According to the Bloomberg editor, this MacBook Pro will continue to use macOS instead of a new operating system, although it is still unclear whether Apple will revise the user interface to make it more touchscreen-friendly.
The devices are intended to retain a traditional laptop form factor rather than relying on a convertible design. However, since macOS now also supports iPad apps, a touchscreen would already be of great use. The MacBook Pro is set to receive a more extensive upgrade in 2025 and, in addition to the touch-sensitive display, will also switch to an OLED panel, which will replace the mini-LED display of the current models. According to previous rumors, the notebook will feature a new panel that stacks two OLED layers to increase maximum brightness and lifespan while reducing power consumption.
