In the course of the fall, the company will also switch the versions of the MacBook Pro optimized for maximum performance to the M2 chip – according to the forecast by Apple insider and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The company has already reported on corresponding plans, including by Gurman himself. The journalist also sees more powerful models with an M2 chip for the Mac mini in the foreseeable future.

New MacBook Pro (14/16 inch): More (M2) performance, same design
Mark Gurman often uses his weekly “Power On” newsletter to give his take on future Apple products. This time he focuses primarily on the Mac division and underscores the assessments he made a few weeks ago. As a result, Apple is working intensively on M2 variants with higher performance, which are used in the MacBook Pro with 14-inch and 16-inch displays. The Cupertino-based company is therefore targeting a release of the high-end MacBooks later this year.

According to Gurman, the new Pro generation does not offer any comprehensive innovations apart from more powerful variants of the M2 chip and possibly other minor hardware changes – Apple will not change anything worth mentioning in the design of the devices.

High-end variants of the M2 chip
As with the previous variants of the particularly powerful mobile Macs, Apple will probably again use the naming scheme of “Pro” and “Max” for the new generation of the MacBook, according to Gurman. The Bloomberg journalist does not provide any information about the targeted increase in performance of the M2 Pro/Max. In June, Gurman also reported on an “Extreme” variant of the M2, which would offer another increase in performance – for example for a new generation of the Mac Pro.

Mac mini should also get M2 (Pro) chip
According to Gurman, the Mac mini will also be upgraded to the M2 chip in 2022. Gurman does not give any details about the small Mac’s M2 equipment. In June, the Apple insider already hinted at another possible chip for the new Mac mini: in addition to the “normal” M2, Apple is also planning a high-end version with the M2 Pro. The new M2 generation of Macs – which is already represented by the MacBook Air and the small MacBook Pro – should give Apple a boost in the recent slowdown in Mac sales, according to Gurman.
