Apple | M2 MacBook Pro vs. M2 MacBook Air – the 10 most important differences – iTopnews.de | macbook

Two MacBooks with the new M2 processor are now available from Apple:

the new M2 MacBook Pro

and the new M2 MacBook Air: watch here

The two laptops are very close in terms of performance and price, but not in terms of technology. We’ll help you decide and reveal the ten most important differences between Pro and Air.

Apple | M2 MacBook Pro vs. M2 MacBook Air – the 10 most important differences – iTopnews.de | macbook | MacBook M2 Vergleich 1

  • New vs Old: The M2 MacBook Air is in a completely new and ultra-slim case, which at 11.3 millimeters is even thinner than the first iPhone (!) from 2007 (11.6 millimeters). The “new” Pro is significantly larger at 15.6 millimeters. And actually it is an “old” computer that even comes with the animated function bar “Touch Bar” from 2016. It was so unpopular with users that Apple abolished it in the new 14- and 16-inch Pro MacBooks in 2021. Tom’s Guide suspects that the new Pro “only exists because Apple still had old components left over”.
  • Height and weight: At 13.6 inches, the new Air’s screen is slightly larger than the Pro’s 13.3 inches. However, the Air comes with the controversial camera notch “Notch” at the top of the display – which is hardly noticeable in everyday life. The fact that the Air, at 1.24 kilos, is 160 grams lighter than the Pro, is more noticeable.
  • Connections: The M2-Pro comes with only two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports – one of which must also be used for charging. If you have a lot of accessories to connect, you can hardly avoid a dock. The popular MagSafe magnet power connector is making a comeback on the Air. This leaves both Thunderbolt/USB 4 slots for a monitor or other accessory.

  • Battery pack: The Pro has the edge here, with 58.2 Wh instead of 52.6 Wh for the Air. This provides around two hours more runtime, with up to 17 hours for surfing and up to 20 hours for video.
  • Keyboard: The “Touch Bar” of the “new old” Pro is a nice gimmick – but also a discontinued model. Neither Apple nor external developers are allowed to offer new functions here. The classic “F” function keys on the Air, which are also preferred by programmers, cannot currently be surpassed in terms of their simplicity and usefulness.

  • Camera: Clear advantage for the Air when video chatting, with a more modern 1080p FaceTime camera instead of the 720p on the Pro.
  • audio: This also shows that the Air is the more modern MacBook with four instead of two speakers for the stereo system.
  • Perfomance: Here, the two computers with the identical M2 chip are noisy first benchmarks practically nothing. However, when it comes to complex multimedia or games, the Pro is slightly ahead because it has active cooling with fans. So if the Air is already getting hot and the heat brake threatens “thermal throttling”, the Pro is still running in a good temperature range. In return, the passively cooled air remains whisper-quiet even with more complex jobs. AppleInsider holds that difference in practice for little.

  • Prices: The “all new” MacBook Air starts at 1,499 euros, the “semi-new” MacBook Pro at 1,599 euros. The Air has “only” an 8-core graphics unit, the Pro has ten cores. In practice, however, this should not be felt much. If you want to upgrade to ten cores with the Air, you pay significantly more at 1,849 euros. But then there are also 512 instead of 256 GB of SSD storage on board. This size is also recommended for the Pro because the 256 GB read and write up to 50 percent slower than the M1 predecessor. Apparently Apple is having trouble delivering the faster components. The problem could also affect the Air, but there are no details yet. In general, however, the Air is the more modern M2 MacBook, apart from the battery and the active cooling, little speaks for the Pro.
  • Alternatives: The predecessor of the MacBook Air is still available from 1,199 euros. The performance of the M1 chip should easily suffice for most purposes. The pace is only around 20 percent below the M2. Those who are not bothered by the no longer fresh housing and the no longer up-to-date technology (e.g. camera) save 300 euros compared to the M2-Air. Compared to the 13.3-inch Pro, the Fall 2021 14-inch model with the M1 Pro chip is much more modern and faster. This makes it the better buy – from 2,249 euros but also a whopping 650 euros more expensive.
