MacBook Pro 2021: Noise – crackling and hissing
The description of the error is very reminiscent of what was observed several times in earlier models of the MacBook Pro. In certain situations, interference noise occurs, which is usually described as crackling, crackling or hissing. The unwanted background noise always occurs for affected users when audio is currently being output, for example when music is playing. High volume intensifies the effect, as many users say.
Most likely software problem
In several cases, Apple Support tried to fix the problem by replacing the hardware. However, the feedback in the forums is that the background noise described continued to occur afterwards. Apple has not yet officially commented on the issue, but the company is almost certainly investigating the problem.
Temporary workaround: shoot down coreaudiod
However, the noise can be eliminated at least for a short time, because the guilty software component seems to have been found. If you look for the activity monitor on the Mac and then end the macOS process “coreaudiod”, you won’t be bothered by the annoying crackling and crackling for a while.
Reports have been available since January 2022
The oldest thread in Apple Discussions dates back to January, since then hundreds of users have joined with the same question. It is often heard in the discussion that there are no longer any problems after a software update – but the cracking often came back after a few weeks. The only thing that can be said with certainty is that neither macOS 12.2 nor 12.3 provided a general remedy.
