Apple | MacBook Pro 2023: Everything about design and features | macbook

At the end of 2021, Apple presented the redesigned MacBook Pro with the high-end M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Now there is a successor with new hardware.

As speculated in advance, Apple actually presented the new MacBook Pro models for 2023 today. TECHBOOK summarizes what the new high-end laptops are capable of.

New M2 chips with even more power

Last year Apple already equipped the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro 13.3 inch with the new M2 chip. The successor to Apple’s first own computer processor is even more powerful and energy-efficient. For the new MacBook Pro models for 2023, the company has further increased the chip.

The 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models receive the M2 Pro and M2 Max as an upgrade over their 2021 predecessors. Not only do the new chips have more CPU and GPU cores, but also more memory bandwidth and larger memory.

M2 Pro

The 2021 M1 Pro still came with 16 graphics processor cores (GPU cores) and 10 processor cores (CPU cores). The M2 Pro increases the performance in both areas, so that a total of 19 GPU cores and up to 12 CPU cores are available. The new chip is manufactured using the second generation of Apple’s 5-nanometer process and contains 20 percent more transistors than the M1 Pro. According to Apple, the M2 Pro should achieve up to 20 percent higher CPU performance and 30 percent higher graphics performance than its predecessor. However, the memory bandwidth remains the same at 200 gigabytes per second (GB/s) and the maximum supported memory is still limited to 32 gigabytes.

M2 Max

The M2 Max has the same 12-core CPU as the M2 Pro, but the chip is equipped with up to 38 GPU cores. That’s 6 GPU cores more than in the M1 Max for a theoretical performance increase of up to 30 percent. Compared to its predecessor, the chip contains 10 billion additional transistors – a total of 67 billion – and supports up to 96 gigabytes of memory. The memory bandwidth remains the same at 400 GB/s.

Both chips enable longer battery runtimes than their predecessors. The MacBook Pro 14 now lasts up to 18 hours and the MacBook Pro 16 up to 22 hours on a charge – that’s an hour longer than before. Also new to the M2 Pro and M2 Max is the next-generation 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says is up to 40 percent faster than its predecessor.

Wi-Fi 6E and 8K image output

It was already known in advance that a new MacBook Pro with the device code “A2779exists that supports Wi-Fi 6E. Now Apple has officially confirmed that the MacBook Pro models for 2023 are actually the first Macs with the brand new wireless technology. Wi-Fi 6E uses the 6 gigahertz band for faster transmission speeds and more stability. However, a compatible router is required to use it.

The HDMI port in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro has also been upgraded. It now supports the image output in 8K resolution and with 60 Hertz, as well as in 4K resolution with 240 Hertz. So users have even more options for connecting high-resolution screens to the MacBook Pro.

Prices and Availability

Apple has raised the price of both the 14-inch and 16-inch models of the 2023 MacBook Pro. The 14-inch model now costs 150 euros more with a starting price of 2399 euros and the 16-inch model costs 250 euros more at 2999 euros. There is an M2 Pro with 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores, 16 GB in the MacBook Pro 14 inch R.A.M. and 512 GB of SSD storage. Also, only the weaker 67 watt power adapter is included in the scope of delivery. In the MacBook Pro 16 inch, on the other hand, there is the full M2 Pro with 12 CPU cores and 19 GPU cores and also 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD storage.

The starting prices for the M2 Max models of the 2023 MacBook Pro are even higher. The 14-inch model starts at 3699 euros for the M2 Max with 12 CPU cores and 30 GPU cores, as well as 32 GB of RAM and 1 terabyte of SSD storage. If you need the full 38 GPU cores, you have to pay 230 euros for this option. The 16-inch model starts at 4149 euros, but comes directly with the large M2 Max with 38 GPU cores. However, RAM and SSD storage remain the same size. Both the 14-inch and 16-inch M2 Max models can be configured with up to 96GB of RAM and 8TB of SSD storage. This increases the prices to 7379 euros and 7699 euros respectively.

Both 2023 MacBook Pro models come in space gray and silver. Pre-orders are now possible, delivery begins on January 24th.
