Apple and Vietnam talk about expanding production
Apple has also become active, as CEO Tim Cook met with the Prime Minister of Vietnam to discuss issues related to local production. This is part of a government program to persuade US companies and investors to become more involved in Vietnam. It’s already an important location for Apple – for example, a large part of the AirPods production takes place there. Two years ago, it was said that Apple wanted to free itself from its current dependence on China in the long term, but that was not so easy. The large army of qualified workers, the well-developed infrastructure and more manufacturing expertise than in other countries are strong arguments.
The current problems due to the country’s corona policy, which is being criticized more and more, are likely to accelerate plans to no longer rely largely on China. The exact details of the talks between Cook and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh were not disclosed, but the most important topic was: Apple’s business activities in Vietnam and possible expansion. Cook also thanked the country for creating a comfortable environment. In early 2021, for example, it was announced that Apple was investing $270 million in manufacturing facilities to pull some of its iPad and notebook production out of China. That doesn’t happen overnight either, but it should ensure that in the future it will no longer be affected in this way by a system failure.
