Apple | MacBook Pro with M2 chip: base model with slower SSD speed | macbook

Apple | MacBook Pro with M2 chip: base model with slower SSD speed | macbook |

Apple not only introduced the new MacBook Air with the M2 chip during the WWDC 2022 keynote, but also a revised 13-inch MacBook Pro with the same processor. While you still have to wait for the release of the MacBook Air – it should be in July – the MacBook Pro model is already available.

As some YouTube videos reveal, the basic model of the new M2 MacBook Pro with 256 GB of SSD storage (from 1,599 euros at Apple) has a significantly lower read and write rate than the comparable predecessor model. For example, YouTube channels Max Tech and Created Tech took a closer look at the new 256GB model and also used Blackmagic’s Disk Speed Test app to test the SSD. Both read and write speeds were around 1,450 MB/s, which corresponded to a read speed that was around 50 percent slower and a write rate that was around 30 percent slower than the identically equipped MacBook Pro with an M1 chip.

Max Tech’s Vadim Yuryev achieved the following scores using the Disk Speed Test app:

  • 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1/256GB) read rate: 2,900 MB/s
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro (M2/256GB) read rate: 1,446 MB/s
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1/256GB) write rate: 2,215 MB/s
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro (M2/256GB) write rate: 1,463 MB/s

When disassembling the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, Yuryev discovered that the 256 GB model was equipped with only one NAND flash memory chip – the predecessor had two, each with 128 GB. “This difference probably explains why the new model has a slower SSD, since multiple NAND chips in parallel allow for higher speeds,” surmises MacRumors.

However, it seems that the reduced speed only occurs on the 13-inch MacBook Pro with 256 GB SSD. In the MacRumors form, Aaron Rollo ran the Disk Speed Test app on a 512GB model with the M2 chip and achieved speeds similar to the M1 model. “That probably means the 512GB model still comes with two 256GB flash memory chips,” MacRumors said. The reasons for installing a 256 GB NAND chip alone can only be speculated on, costs and/or availability restrictions were probably responsible for this. We have included the two YouTube videos mentioned above under the article.
