Apple presented macOS Ventura to the public for the first time at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2022 – and to the astonishment of many, Apple said goodbye to a whole series of Macs: The “garbage can” Mac Pro from 2013, which Apple sold until the end of 2019, will not no longer supported – just like the MacBook Air or the Mac mini before 2018. In addition, the first MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar, which Apple sold from 2016 to 2017, are no longer supported.As MacRumors.com learned from a memo sent to Apple Authorized Service Providers, at the end of the month the “Vintage” list expanded to include some Apple devices. The three MacBook Pro models, which Apple was the first to equip with the then new Touch Bar, end up on the “vintage” list: the 2016 MacBook Pro 13″ with two Thunderbolt ports, the 2016 MacBook Pro 13″ with four Thunderbolt ports as well as the 2016 MacBook Pro 15″ then belong to the “old iron”.
More Macs and iPads
But not only the 2016 MacBook Pro models belong to the “vintage” category from the end of July 2022, Apple also wants to classify the 13″ MacBook Air (early 2015) and the MacBook without a name suffix (early 2016) as “vintage”. The memo also reveals that Apple is also adding the 2015 iMac 21.5″ and 2015 iMac 27″ to the “vintage” list. But not only Macs will soon be on this list, but also the iPad introduced in 2016 First generation Pro with 9.7″ screen.
Repairs do not end immediately
Apple places devices that have not been shipped from Apple for at least five years on the “vintage” list. By mid-2018, this meant that Apple no longer officially repaired the devices – but fortunately the company changed this: Apple stores and authorized Apple service partners can now repair the devices for another two years – but only as long as parts are available. Apple no longer guarantees this after the devices landed on the “vintage” list.
