Apple | This app doubles the brightness of the Macbook Pro | macbook

The screen performance of the 14-inch and 16-inch Macbook Pro is impressive. However, the system rarely utilizes its full brightness. Unless you help.

The Macbook Pro from 2021 can be permanently 1000 nits bright and even 1600 nits at its peak, like the Pro Display XDR – unrivaled values for a consumer laptop. There’s just one catch: the monitor only outputs this high level of brightness when the content demands it, such as an HDR video. In normal operation, the Macbook Pro is a maximum of 500 nits bright.

Developers Jordi Bruin and Ben Harraway

have according to “Arstechnica”
but now found a way to achieve 1000 nits of brightness everywhere on the desktop and in applications, double the normal. Their app Vivid uses a “smart mix” of Metal, Carbon, Cocoa, Swift, SwiftUI and even C code. The app is not yet fully developed, when switching between spaces, for example, the brightness is adjusted. A license for Vivid costs 16 US dollars, the demo version divides the screen into two halves, in which only one achieves high brightness. Sufficient for the first impression, but you can’t work with it in the long run. As the demo shows, Vivid also makes the Pro Display XDR controlled by the Macbook Pro M1 Pro/Max twice as bright, presumably also the new Studio Display, which has the same performance data.

According to the developer’s documentation, you don’t put your hardware at risk, only the power consumption increases significantly, which is not surprising. However, one cannot guarantee that a future macOS update will not disable Vivid; Bruin and Harraway can only assure that in this case the function will be restored within three months via an update. Otherwise there would be money back.
