Question: With my MacBook Pro from 2019, I can no longer record in stereo in macOS Big Sur, despite the three built-in microphones. I use Audacity and I think it has always worked so far.
Mac & i replies: The three microphones in newer MacBook Pros work as what is known as a microphone array. They work together under the control of a signal processor or a signal-processing algorithm. Purpose of the exercise: no matter how committed the speaker moves in front of his notebook, the voice quality always remains good. This is a blessing, especially under the conditions in the home office.
However, these onboard microphones have never recorded in stereo, their signal always ended up in mono on the Mac. However, the three microphones in Audacity now register as mono devices – so they only end up on the left or right channel. It is best to define the corresponding track as a mono track from the start.
