Question: I read your review of SD and microSD cards for the Mac and am waiting for an adapter that takes a microSD card and disappears completely into the slot of my 14-inch MacBook Pro. Is there any news?
Mac & i replies: Unfortunately, the manufacturer BaseQi has still not presented its Stealth Drive in the version for Apple’s new MacBooks. But we successfully tried the 103A model, which is actually intended for MacBook Air computers, in the 2021 MacBook Pro 14-inch. The adapter disappears flush with the outer edge of the MacBook and is only noticeable in the space gray model due to its lighter color. You can pull it out again with your fingernails.
The Stealth Drive 103A (at Amazon about 32 euros) unfortunately only handles UHS-I up to 103 MB/s and accepted capacities of up to 1 TB in the test. With a SanDisk Extreme Pro in the adapter, we determined transfer rates of 74 MB/s when writing and 88.3 MB/s when reading. This corresponds to the speed of older 2.5-inch hard drives.
The Stealth Drive BaseQi 103A also fits exactly into the SD card slot of the 14-inch MacBook Pro and accepts a microSD card in UHS-I format.
