According to news from Jiwei, Samsung Electronics reportedly will increase the production of Exynos chipsets for Galaxy smartphones to increase the proportion of its internal processors in Galaxy devices and reduce its dependence on US chip maker Qualcomm.

At present, Samsung’s high-end smart phones rely heavily on Qualcomm’s chip solutions, and most of the low-end devices use MediaTek processors. Exynos chips only account for about 20% of Samsung’s mobile phone shipments. However, starting next year, this situation may change.

According to the “Electronic Times” report, industry insiders predict that by 2022, Samsung Electronics will increase the number of Galaxy phones equipped with exynos by two to three times, and the System LSI Division will more than double the production capacity of Exynos chipsets.

This strategy shift is partly stimulated by the current global chip shortage. Previously, due to insufficient supply of Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chips, Samsung Electronics had to postpone the launch of the Galaxy S21 FE from this year to early 2022. The chip crisis has dealt a huge blow to the company’s smartphone sales.

In order to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek’s chip solutions, Samsung has set a goal of reaching 300 million smartphones in 2022, compared with about 250 million in 2021. Emphasizing that Exynos processors can also help Samsung System The LSI division and foundry business establish a more competitive position.

The Exynos 2200 equipped with AMD GPU is said to be able to solve the overheating problem that Samsung chips may have encountered in the past, and can also improve the user experience by supporting ray tracing, becoming the first mobile chipset with this feature. According to reports, Exynos 2200 will use a 4nm process, while the Exynos 1280 chipset for entry-level smartphones will use a 5nm process.

For a long time, Samsung Electronics has been considering integrating more internal chipsets into its mobile products instead of relying on suppliers in different countries and regions. However, the quality and consumer acceptance of Samsung’s processors are still its main concerns.

Although Samsung intends to reduce its dependence on cooperative suppliers, 31 of the 64 new smartphones and tablets launched in 2022 still use Qualcomm chips. The highly anticipated Galaxy S22 series will use the Snapdragon 888 processor in some countries and the Exynos 2200 processor in other countries. At the same time, according to The Elec, Samsung’s new flip phone will only use the Snapdragon 888 processor. (Proofreading/Yuki)Return to Sohu to see more
