The new iPhone 14 Pro generation features accident detection for the first time. The function uses various sensors to detect a possible accident and then automatically starts an emergency call if you don’t cancel it yourself beforehand. The YouTuber TechRax, which has around 7.6 million subscriptions, has now undertaken a reasonably realistic crash test to test the new feature.

It is interesting to see in the case of TechRax that the iPhone 14 Pro used only triggers the emergency call about ten seconds after the impact, and not immediately afterwards. The assumption is that the iPhone first “waits” based on the supplied sensor data and noises and makes sure that it really is an accident and not another event – for example a rough downhill ride by a mountain biker , a roller coaster ride or a wash cycle in the washing machine.

After the short break that the iPhone takes, the accident detection mode is triggered by default, as Apple also presented during the keynote. After the accident detection is activated, the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) waits ten seconds to see if you react to the warning message shown on the display – if this is not the case, a signal tone is emitted along with another 10-second timer, at the end of which the emergency services are contacted. This is done via an automated message, during which the current coordinates of the casualty are also passed on.

Anyone who owns an Apple Watch will probably already be familiar with this function in a modified form. There has been a fall detection on the Apple smartwatch since generation 4, which notifies the rescue services according to a similar scheme if the wearer has a serious fall. Here, too, you first have to wait and see whether you react to the fall report; if this is not the case, an emergency call is made automatically.
