With Pegatron, Apple has gained another assembly partner for the production of the iPhone 14 in India in order to expand its production base outside of China.
Apple is rapidly expanding iPhone production in India
Apple’s Taiwanese assembly partners Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron all have iPhone manufacturing facilities in India, where the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models are made.
So far, only Foxconn in India had taken care of the iPhone 14. Apple’s assembly partner had started manufacturing the iPhone 14 in India in September, within 10 days of the global launch. This underscored Apple’s desire to expand production of its latest devices in a country that is becoming a major manufacturing hub.
Now Pegatron follows as the second Apple partner in India that has started assembling the new iPhone 14 models, which will be used for both local demand and export. As Bloomberg reports, Pegatron’s new Indian factory in the southern state of Tamil Nadu has more than 7,000 employees and has already manufactured the iPhone 12 this year.
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also shared the expectation that Apple’s operations in India will continue to grow, with the “medium to long-term goal” of sourcing 40-45% of iPhones from that country.
“As a result, Foxconn’s Indian-made iPhones will grow by at least 150% in 2023, and the medium to long-term goal is to ship 40-45% of iPhones from India (vs. the current 2-4%), which means that Foxconn’s iPhone production capacity in India will increase rapidly in the next few years,” said Kuo.

The expansion in India comes amid tensions between the US and China and the recent outbreak of the coronavirus at the world’s largest iPhone factory in central China’s Zhengzhou delays in production cares.
While Apple is successfully diversifying its iPhone production, one challenge is that many of the components are made in China and then have to be shipped to manufacturing facilities.
