iPhone 14 Plus: size and design
A display diagonal of 6.7 inches, a good 16 cm high and 7.8 cm wide: The iPhone 14 Plus is the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. But in terms of design and materials, it looks more like an enlarged version of the normal iPhone 14. So there are clear differences to the Pro: The frame is made of aluminum, not stainless steel. And at the back there are only two instead of three camera lenses. A consequence of this: it is not nearly as heavy, weighing only 203 instead of 240 grams. The normal iPhone, on the other hand, is of course even lighter, at just under 15 cm in height it is content with 172 grams. All iPhone models are waterproof.
What does the big display bring?
How good is the display of the iPhone 14 Plus?
In the lab, the display of the iPhone 14 Plus delivers results similar to those of its little brother, the iPhone 14, but is only a touch better in some respects: With HDR content, the display is very bright at 1,226 candelas per square meter (iPhone 14: 1,167 cd/m2), with normal images is about 868 cd/m2 Final (iPhone 14: 833 cd/m2). In the laboratory, however, it didn’t quite reach the measured values of the 14 Pro Max, for example, which has over 2,095 cd/m²2 has set a new brightness record in the test. Typical OLED: Contrasts and color representation are excellent. The sharpness is impeccable at around 460 ppi (at 2778×1284 pixels), no less sharp than the Pro Max. But you have to do without the always-on display of the Pro series.
Camera: The 14 Plus stays at 12 megapixels
When it comes to camera development, fans of high megapixel numbers and larger sensor pixels with a resolution that is not excessive have been at odds with each other for years. But Apple itself shows that the principle is less important than the results: In the Pro models, Apple uses a main camera with 48 megapixels (but combines four pixels in normal mode, so that 12 megapixels are saved in the end). With the iPhone 14 Plus, Apple remains true to the 12 megapixel, but uses a new sensor with larger pixels and a brighter aperture (f/1.5) than the Pro. Together with the new Photonic Engine (intelligent image processing of the raw camera data), this leads to convincing results for the main camera in the camera test: the bottom line is that the image quality in daylight is just as good as that of the Pro models, but only slightly in low light worse.
Only telephoto shots fall short in image sharpness compared to the Pro Max, which is probably why the camera app also allows maximum zooming with up to five times magnification. And the ultra wide-angle camera does not have a macro mode for photos from a few centimeters away. Good: Videos shot freehand, for example during sports, hardly stutter after activating the action mode. Cinema mode now also films videos with 4K resolution.
iPhone 14 Plus: Long runners, but not a record
At the presentation, Apple praised the iPhone 14 Plus as the iPhone with the longest battery life to date. Irritating: In detail, Apple specified a shorter runtime for video playback compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max (20 hours vs. 25 hours for video streaming). This caused irritation for some iPhone prospects. In the long-term use test in the COMPUTER BILD laboratory, the iPhone 14 Plus achieved a very good runtime (11:17 hours). But the iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted more than two hours longer (13:36 hours). So the runtime record is denied to the Plus. There is a simple explanation for the contradictory information from Apple: Depending on the usage scenario, one model or the other could be slightly ahead. But one thing is certain: If you are looking for an iPhone with a long service life, you should include the iPhone 14 Plus in your shortlist. Because in the test it lasted a good two hours longer than the normal iPhone 14 (9:13 hours). However, patience is required when charging: In the test, it took almost two and a half hours until the empty battery was fully charged again. And only if one of the newer 20-watt USB-C power adapters was used. If you charge your iPhone overnight and only pick it up again in the morning after a good night’s sleep, you can of course just as well use an old 5-watt power supply.
Apple A15 bionic chip: enough!
Like the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus works with the A15 bionic chip from the previous year, at least in the better version with a fifth graphics core from the iPhone 13 Pro. In the test, it was around 10 to 15 percent slower than the A16 Bionic in the 14 Pro models. Nevertheless, the working and operating speed is excellent, iOS 16 slips. As of October 2022, no Android smartphone is faster. The latest radio technology such as 5G (including satellite connection, so far only in North America), Wifi 6 (no 6E), NFC and ultra-wideband (UWB, for example for airtag localization with centimeter accuracy) are on board.
Switching from iPhone 8 Plus to iPhone 14 Plus
For owners of an iPhone 8 Plus – the last “Plus” model from 2017 – the jump in display, camera and speed (both CPU and 5G) will still be gigantic. But there is an alternative: the iPhone 13 Pro Max from the previous year has the same processor, a telephoto camera, longer battery life. On the other hand, the main camera is worse and new functions such as auto accident detection or the video action mode are missing. The purchase is particularly worthwhile for cheap offers. Normally, the 13 Pro Max is 70 to 100 euros more expensive than the new 14 Plus.
Conclusion: iPhone 14 Plus as a Max alternative
The iPhone 14 Plus is ideal for anyone who is looking for a large iPhone with a long battery life and an excellent main camera, but does not need any pro features such as a 120 Hertz display, 48 megapixel photos in RAW format or sharp telephoto shots . For this target group, it is actually a cheap Max alternative, because the iPhone 14 Pro Max is several hundred more expensive (according to Apple’s original prices, the difference is 300 euros). We would therefore have liked to write that Apple had finally brought a cheap XXL iPhone onto the market, but the price of well over 1,000 euros, at least at the market launch, is clearly too high. After all, it’s the cheapest entry into the world of big iPhones.
iPhone 14 Plus: price, storage, colors
Sales start (release) for the iPhone 14 Plus is October 7, 2022, pre-orders began on September 9, 2022. Five colors would be conceivable: violet (new), black, white, blue and red. The iPhone 14 Plus costs 150 euros more than the iPhone 14. The smallest variant with 128 gigabytes (GB) of memory officially costs 1,149 euros. There are also larger memory variants with 256 GB (1,279 euros) and 512 GB (1,539 euros)
