While some Android smartphones have been offering an always-on display for years, even the Apple iPhone 13 Pro (approx. 1,150 euros on Amazon) on this handy feature. Rumor has it that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will finally get a display that can display information even in standby mode, which is made possible, among other things, by a new LTPO AMOLED panel whose frame rate can be increased to up to 1 Hz can be reduced.
Apple presented the next major update for iOS at WWDC on Monday and immediately distributed the first beta version of iOS 16 to developers. 9to5Mac was able to find several indications of an always-on display in this beta version. Specifically, the beta version of iOS 16 contains at least three new frameworks for controlling the screen backlight, all of which contain entries for an always-on feature.
9to5Mac emphasizes that these frameworks are not intended for the Apple Watch always-on display, as they use components that are unique to iOS but not available in watchOS, such as the lock screen. Several indications of an always-on display were also found in Springboard, the component that manages the lock screen of an iPhone.
The 9to5Mac team was even able to find some hidden settings that allow the always-on feature to be enabled on older iPhones to test the feature before the iPhone 14 Pro launch. If you believe rumours, this function will ultimately only be available on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
