There have been rumors for months that the iPhone 14 Pro will have an always-on display. The main reason why this feature is reserved for the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is that only these two models have an LTPO AMOLED panel whose frame rate can be reduced to 1 Hz to save power . The display of the iPhone 13 Pro (approx. 1,100 euros on Amazon) can only regulate its frame rate from 10 Hz to 120 Hz.
9to5Mac has now found concrete details on what this always-on display will look like on the iPhone 14 Pro in the code of the latest iOS 16 beta. Apparently, Apple is taking a similar approach to the Apple Watch, i.e. the display is darkened in standby mode, but both the time and the widgets remain visible. Even the background image remains visible, although it’s unclear if this applies to all images or just the ones that come with iOS 16.
Because Apple’s own wallpapers get a new “Sleep” version, which the system uses when the smartphone is put into standby mode. The images become significantly darker because the dark areas of an OLED display consume less power, while some images are also reduced in color.
The always-on display is one of many features that will be reserved for the more expensive Pro models this year. This also applies to the Apple A16 Bionic, to the new design with a double punch hole instead of a notch, to the 48 MP main camera and to the more modern and economical LPDDR5 RAM.
