Iphone 14 | Apple iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro: Which should you buy? | apple iphone

In early September, Apple announced the iPhone 14 series at an event in Cupertino, allowing us to delve into the different models available for 2022.

The series consists of four devices, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Yes, that’s right, there is no iPhone 14 mini this year.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro price

Of course, the prices of the iPhone 14 models differ, we don’t need to tell you that.

Luckily in the US the price hasn’t increased compared to last year, but it might be different in other countries (especially the UK).

This time the prices are as follows:

Design of the iPhone 14 compared to the iPhone 14 Pro

  • iPhone 14/14 Plus: aluminum frame, dual camera, notch, five colors
  • iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max: stainless steel frame, triple camera, dynamic island, four colors

The standard Apple iPhone 14 models are identical to the iPhone 13 models, while retaining the cutout at the top of the display. The iPhone 14 Plus looks the same as the iPhone 14 but, as you’d expect, it’s bigger.

As in previous years, there are again two lenses, flat edges and an aluminum frame in both sizes. They are also waterproof and dustproof according to IP68.

However, the iPhone 14 Pro models look different from the standard iPhone 14 models and also different from any iPhone that has come before.

As has been widely rumoured, the cutout has been replaced by what Apple calls Dynamic Island. This is a pill-shaped recess that houses the front camera and sensors, and houses animations and widget-like information. The dynamic island shows different notifications and adapts depending on what you are doing.

For example, when using Apple Pay, the dynamic island turns into a square, while on a call it widens, showing call duration and sound waves when you open another app during the call. Overall, it’s a big shift in the design language that Apple has been using for years, and it feels very different using the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max compared to its regular counterparts – in a good way.

The iPhone 14 Pro models feature a triple rear camera on the back and are heavier than the standard models, as they have a shiny stainless steel frame instead of aluminum.

The models are also not available in the same colors. Buyers of the Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus can choose between the colors Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and (Product) Red. The iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, comes in Space Black, Gold, Deep Purple, and Silver.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro display

  • iPhone 14: 6.1-inch, Super Retina XDR OLED, 2532×1170, 460 ppi, 1200 nits
  • iPhone 14 Plus: 6.7-inch, Super Retina XDR OLED, 2778 x 1284, 458 ppi, 1200 nits
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 6.1″, Super Retina XDR OLED, 2556×1179, 460 ppi, 1-120Hz refresh rate, Always On Display, 2000 nits
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 6.7-inch, Super Retina XDR OLED, 2796×1290, 460 ppi, 1-120Hz refresh rate, Always On Display, 2000 nits

The Apple iPhone 14 has the same display size as the iPhone 13, i.e. a 6.1-inch screen. The iPhone 14 Plus, on the other hand, has a 6.7-inch display.

The iPhone 14 Pro also offers a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch screen. All four offer an OLED panel, as well as True Tone, Haptic Touch and HDR support, with the Pro models offering a range of additional features including power saving modes that can dim the display more intelligently.

The iPhone 14 Pro models again offer the ProMotion adaptive refresh rate, albeit with a lower minimum refresh rate than the iPhone 13 Pro models, which is only 1 Hz. This is ideal for saving battery.

Another big boost for the Pro models comes from the brightness department, where they get a huge jump to 2000nits peak brightness, which makes a difference if you’re using your phone in bright light or sunshine.

The iPhone 14 Pro models also feature an always-on display, which most Android phones offer, which allows you to view information without the screen being on and unlocked. This cleverly reflects what you have on your iOS 16 lock screen.

Specifications iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 14 Pro

  • iPhone 14/14 Plus: A15 chip, 128GB/256GB/512GB storage, up to 20 hours/26 hours of video playback
  • iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max: A16 chip, 256GB/512GB/1TB storage, up to 20 hours/29 hours of video playback

The Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus run on the same chipset as the iPhone 13 Pro, namely the A15 with five-core GPU. For comparison, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini also ran the A15, but they have a four-core GPU.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, on the other hand, run on the A16 chip, which offers a performance boost over the A15 and therefore the standard iPhone 14 models. It is the first time that Apple uses different chips in its iPhone models of the same series.

The storage options for the standard models are the same as the iPhone 13 models. That means you can choose between 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. iPhone 14 Pro models start at 128GB and there are also 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB models.

Battery capacity differs between the standard iPhone 14 models and the iPhone 14 Pro models, as well as between the Standard and Pro models themselves, with the Plus and Max variants offering larger batteries.

Apple typically measures battery capacity in hours, not mAh. On the comparison sites, you can expect 20 hours of video playback for the standard iPhone 14 and 26 hours for the iPhone 14 Plus. The iPhone 14 Pro offers a minimum of 23 hours, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max sits at around 29 hours.

We tested the battery performance of all iPhone 14 models and the iPhone 14 Plus comes out on top, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Plus excels in this area. So if you want a big screen and big battery, it’s a good choice.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro cameras

  • iPhone 14/14 Plus: Two rear cameras, 2x optical zoom, digital zoom up to 5x
  • iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max: Triple rear camera, 3x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, 6x optical zoom range, digital zoom up to 15x

The Apple iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus are each equipped with a dual camera on the back. They have a 12 MP wide-angle main camera and a secondary ultra-wide camera. Those are the same resolutions as the iPhone 13, but the main camera has been upgraded to the level of the iPhone 13 Pro, which means a slightly larger aperture of f/1.5 instead of f/1.6.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, on the other hand, have received a major upgrade. They have a 48MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra wide-angle sensor with a larger aperture, and a 12MP telephoto sensor.

The iPhone 14 Pro models offer a 3x optical zoom and a 15x digital zoom thanks to the telephoto lens. The standard iPhone 14 models have 5x digital zoom, but no optical zoom. The Pro models also offer the ProRES function, which allows you to capture raw images at 48 megapixels.

All four models have similar features like Portrait mode with depth control, Night mode, Photographic styles and Movie mode. All four iPhone 14 models also feature an Action mode and a Photonic Engine, which is said to improve images in low light conditions. All four models offer great results, and while the Pro models are superior, the standard models still produce great point-and-shoot images.

As for the front camera, all four models have an upgraded 12-megapixel front camera, which for the first time offers a larger aperture of f/1.9 and autofocus, which is very helpful for selfies and video calls.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro software

All four models of the Apple iPhone 14 run on iOS 16. The user experience is therefore pretty much identical across all four models, although as we mentioned earlier, the iPhone 14 Pro models have some additional features in the camera department, as well as Always On Display and Dynamic Island receive.

You can read everything about iOS 16 and the features it offers in our separate post about the operating system.

Conclusion

There are some differences between the standard iPhone 14 models and the iPhone 14 Pro models, e.g. B. in the design, the materials, the chipset, the storage options, the battery capacities, the display functions and the camera range.

But there are also some notable similarities, like the flat bezels, Face ID, iOS 16 software experience, front camera upgrades, and display sizes. Overall, the iPhone 14 Pro models differ more than in previous years, thanks largely to the Dynamic Island.

For those who want the latest tricks Apple has concocted, the iPhone 14 Pro models are the devices to check out. For anyone looking for a great phone that costs less, the standard iPhone 14 options are still impressive – especially in the case of the iPhone 14 Plus – but with minimal differences compared to the iPhone 13 models, you might consider an iPhone 13 Pro to get a few more features for a similar price.
