The iPhone 14 Pro: In the hardware test by Stiftung Warentest, the 2020 models take the top spot.Image: keystone
Apple is back on the smartphone throne. The current iPhone generation and especially the Pro models all get consistently good marks in consumer protection tests. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement.
Not a single smartphone has yet Test by the German Stiftung Warentest with the top grade “very good”. Spoiler: The iPhone 14 doesn’t make it either – albeit just barely.
The top model iPhone 14 Pro Max with the grade “good (1.6)” is already scratching the limit (from 1.5 there is a grade of “very good”). However, the new iPhone moves past Samsung to take first place in the smartphone ranking. These are the results.
The standard models are also convincing
The examiners praise: “The strengths are, among other things, their particularly good cameras and the perfectly functioning face recognition.” The displays and handling are also “very good” in the test.
Compared to the standard models, the 14 Pro Max and 14 Plus are equipped with larger displays and more battery. The main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro has a resolution of 48 megapixels. It’s the first time in years that Apple has upped the resolution of its cameras. The other models remain at 12 megapixels like their predecessors.
iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max: The currently best cell phones in the test
In the test, the two Pro models achieved the overall rating of “good (1.6)”. The testers especially praised the brilliant display, the very good handling and the robust housing. The devices put up with the drop test a little better than the standard iPhones and also received the sub-grade “very good” for stability.
The most striking innovation compared to its predecessors is the “Dynamic Island” in the display. Where previously there was a notch in the display for the selfie camera and the face scanner, there is now a much smaller pill-shaped recess that can also display notifications.
Other new features: The display is now always on and shows a darkened screen when idle. Inside, the current A16 Bionic chip provides power. If you are looking for the latest and most powerful iPhone, the 14 Pro is the right choice. The 14 Pro Max is no longer quite pocket-sized. In return, it has a larger screen and more battery.
Good, but not cheap: iPhone 14 and 14 Plus
The standard models are the iPhone 14 and brand new this year is the 14 Plus. Both devices cut the Stiftung Warentest with the verdict “good (1.7)”. This puts them on par with the top models from Samsung in a large smartphone comparison.
In contrast to the iPhone 14 Pro, the 14 models have a camera system with only two lenses. The processor is from last year and the display does not support 120 Hertz refresh. According to the Stiftung Warentest, however, the differences in performance are marginal in everyday life.
OLED technology is used for the display. The sizes are 6.1 inches for the iPhone 14 and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 14 Plus. There is no always-on display and the “Dynamic Island” in the standard models.
The assessments by Stiftung Warentest are very similar to the much more expensive Pro models in all important categories: The iPhone 14 is also “very good” in terms of display and handling. The display remained free of damage in the drop test.
Apple only just missed the top grade “very good” for a smartphone and took the top spots with the new iPhones. Only Samsung can currently keep up.
However, Apple also demands a steep price for this: Getting started starts with iPhone 14 at around 930 francs (or 1000 euros) and at 14 per max at 1300 francs (or 1499 euros) – for the smallest memory size.
The wireless connections and the brightness of the display leave room for improvement. Apple advertises the brightest display in a smartphone, but the testers measured a higher value for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
The better camera, the “Dynamic Island” and, in the larger versions, the more powerful battery speak for the Pro models. The conclusion from the test:
«The iPhone 14 Pro is probably the biggest version leap in several years. Nevertheless, iPhone 13 Pro owners can wait another year.”
