Violent protests erupted at the world’s largest iPhone factory in Zhengzhou, China, last Wednesday after widespread COVID lockdowns kept employees from leaving the factory premises for over a month while promised bonuses were not properly paid out, allegedly because of a “Input errors in the computer system”.
Now reported Bloombergaccording to the latest estimates, these protests will result in the production of the Apple iPhone 14 Pro (approx. 1,299 euros on Amazon) will be reduced by six million units by the end of the year. How big the impact on production volume will actually be depends primarily on how quickly Foxconn can resume regular operations after the protests paid scores of employees to quit their jobs – a total of more than 20,000 workers are said to be there have resigned.
Apple had originally planned to produce 87 million iPhone 14 series smartphones by the end of the year, but the production targets for the more popular Pro models in particular can no longer be achieved after the protests. That is likely to further affect the availability of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max after the Apple online store meanwhile already estimates delivery time of four weeks, only few traders still have the devices in stock. Apple and Foxconn expect to make up for the six million missing iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max with increased production in 2023.
