A new iPhone under the Christmas tree? For many customers, this has been standard for years – and of course for Apple itself, where you always do most of the business in the fourth quarter. The rhythm: The latest iPhone generation appears in September or October at the very latest. After a few weeks with slightly longer delivery times, the devices are then easily available at short notice so that they can be bought before Christmas. Different this year:
A COVID lockdown at the world’s main iPhone factory in Zhengzhou, China means Apple is unable to reach normal production levels. The group even felt compelled to issue its own official statement this week. The question that worries many potential customers now: Which iPhones are still available? And is it still going well with the Christmas shopping?
It depends on the model
That depends very much on which model you would like to have. This year, Apple is working in a much more segmented way than before. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are a slightly souped-up variant of the iPhone 13 from 2021 – complemented by the fact that the iPhone 14 Plus has a new 6.7-inch form factor, replacing the nicely compact iPhone 13 mini. These two models are currently easily available, be it now at Apple itself or in regular retail stores, for example from mobile operators.
However, the greater iPhone demand this year is elsewhere: the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. These two models come with really new features, be it an improved camera, the always-on display or the “Dynamic Island ” with modified camera notch. And despite the sometimes significantly increased prices, the devices are popular according to market researchers. And this is exactly where the availability problem sits.
Most Popular Models from Zero-COVID Factory
The main production site of iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max is said factory in Zhengzhou, where the Communist Party is trying to enforce a tough zero-COVID policy. In some cases, employees should even “flee” from there so that they don’t have to go into lockdown. The factory operator, Apple’s most important manufacturer Foxconn, is reacting by increasing bonus payments, but what that means is unclear.
A look at Apple’s official availability indicator for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max proves the situation. No matter which model you choose, which color and which memory size – not a single one is available immediately. The waiting times are consistently a month or longer – those who order now should receive their device from December 9th to 16th. Availability in Apple stores is also not in sight. Users can, if they like, ask their cell phone provider. There should still be stocks in individual branches, but this is a bit like playing the lottery. Anyone who really wants an iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max for Christmas should order now so as not to miss the last possible date. Alternatively, of course, there is always the possibility of switching to the less attractive models or those from previous years. Apple itself resells the iPhone 13, iPhone SE and iPhone 12 in different versions, and there are even more models in the regular market.
