5G performance of smartphones for practical comparison
The company Ookla, which specializes in Internet speed tests, among other things, examines the data rates achieved in practice in mobile networks at regular intervals. The five most popular fast smartphones are analyzed, broken down by individual country. In her current Evaluation, which refers to the third quarter of this year, the experts examine the conditions in the USA and the United Kingdom as well as those in Germany and other countries. All providers that operate a 5G network and devices with a market share of at least 0.5 percent were taken into account. According to Ookla, the values determined provide fairly reliable information about the speeds that users can typically expect.
Four iPhones in Germany at the top
In Germany, four iPhone models occupy the top spots. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are at the top, almost level, which is not surprising given the identical technical inner workings in terms of mobile communications. Apple’s current top devices achieve median download rates of around 181 or 178 Mbit/second at Ookla, and the experts record a good 30 Mbit/second when uploading. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max take second and third place, each with slightly less than 150 Mbit/second (upload: almost 22 Mbit/second). The only non-Cupertino device in the top five is the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G at around 141 Mbps. Samsung smartphones are not included in the Ookla overview.
The highest data rates are achieved in Brazil
The result in the United Kingdom is even more impressive. There, iPhones even secure the first five places in the 5G ranking list. It’s different in the USA: Between Hawaii and Maine, the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro are also in first and second place, but behind them are three smartphones from Samsung with the Galaxy Z Fold4, Galaxy S21+ 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra. With the exception of the foldable model, however, these lag significantly behind Apple’s devices in terms of data rates. What is also remarkable about the statistics is that, according to Ookla, the highest speeds are recorded in Brazil. At just under 360 Mbit/second, they are about twice as high there as in Germany. Incidentally, the Motorola Moto G 5G Plus takes first place in the country on the Amazon ahead of the Xiaomi Poco X4 Pro 5G. iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 occupy positions three to five.
