Iphone 14 | Colorful stripes: Mysterious display error on the iPhone 14 Pro | apple iphone

Apple is internally reviewing user reports that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max experience strange display errors when turning on. The reports have been popping up for weeks on various forums like Reddit and initially appear to have no effect on day-to-day operations, but are nevertheless annoying because they fear that their smartphone might be defective.

The problem occurs both when the current Pro iPhones start up and (less frequently) when exiting sleep mode by tapping the screen or pressing the sleep/wake button. Horizontal green and yellow stripes appear briefly (when operating in portrait format). These appear either individually (see image above) or clustered across the entire screen. In an internal memo intended for use by both internal and external service technicians and available to MacRumors, Apple admits the display errors.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max users could “report that they see brief horizontal flashes on the screen when turning on or unlocking their phone”. Apple is aware of the problem. According to the memo, however, it is not hardware damage. “A software update will be released shortly that will fix the problem,” Apple said. It is still unclear how often the error occurs and what the exact trigger is – an iPhone 14 Pro Max in the Mac & i editorial team, for example, has not yet shown the bug.

Interestingly, the regular iPhone models of 2022 – i.e. Phone 14 and iiPhone 14 Plus – are not affected by the color stripes. These devices have a different inner workings than the Pro models, including the new A16 SoC and the ability to use the screen in always-on mode to display the time, widgets or notifications. There are suspicions that this new feature could have something to do with the display errors.

iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are the most expensive models of the current iPhone generation. Users can spend up to 2100 euros on them from the manufacturer. Due to massive production difficulties in China, they were already difficult to obtain in November, but the supply situation has now normalized again. MacRumors suspects that the bug fix could come with iOS 16.3, which is currently being tested in a beta phase.
