Differentiation based on series rather than size
While there has always been the most powerful, current chip for all models with a new iPhone generation, this will probably change from autumn. TrendForce is now also mentioning that Apple is leaving the iPhone 14 with the A15 of 2021 – only the two Pro versions are to receive the A16. While the breakdown so far has been one model with a smaller display, two medium-sized, and one with a large, Apple will also offer a Max version without the Pro add-on. The iPhone 14 Max and the iPhone 14 Pro Max have displays with the same dimensions, but not the same performance values in terms of the chip.
Lack of chip as a reason?
As already discussed in an earlier report on this subject: There could well be other reasons than the pure differentiation of the model series. In view of the continued very tense situation on the chip market, there is a risk of not being able to produce enough top processors. With new series, there is usually more waste than with more established processes – this not only means higher prices, but also lower quantities. On the other hand, it is important to avoid serious delivery bottlenecks with the iPhone as far as possible, after all it is the top-selling product in the entire Apple range.
