It has long been suspected that the new iPhone 14 Pro generation, which will probably be presented in September this year, will also have an always-on display. This makes it quick and easy to view information without having to tap the screen.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletters Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman has now announced that the always-on display of the iPhone 14 Pro will also support the lockscreen widgets introduced with iOS 16. The latter should provide information about the weather, fitness data and more. In his newsletter it says:

“Like the Apple Watch, the iPhone 14 Pro will be able to show widgets with weather, calendar, stock, activity and other data while keeping the screen at a low brightness and frame rate. And there will be a setting – also like the Apple Watch – that prevents sensitive data from being displayed on the lock screen for everyone to see.”

In addition, the always-on display should also be able to display the time, date and an indicator for unread messages. Similar to the Apple Watch, which has had such a feature since Series 5, users will probably be able to use the iPhone settings to either activate or deactivate the always-on display. So reported MacRumors.

Gurman assumes that the always-on display of the iPhone 14 Pro models will be battery-friendly: A combination of lower brightness and a low refresh rate should ensure this. The ProMotion screens introduced with the iPhone 13 Pro can be throttled down to 10Hz in standby mode. The always-on display should be reserved for the iPhone 14 Pro models, but it can also be extended to the standard models at a later date.
