design and displays

The iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14 differ less from the outside. Both are made of glass and aluminum. The iPhone 14 comes with a ceramic shield on the front screen for more staying power, just like its predecessor. A lot has happened under the coat as well, the performance under temperature has been improved and some features like the mentioned SOS signal, which can also be sent if you don’t have a cell phone connection.

With the 13 model, Apple changed the orientation of its camera lenses to stack them vertically. The 14 model also maintains this approach. In addition, the iPhone 14 comes in five different colors: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Violet and Red. The iPhone 13 was also available in five different color variants: Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, Green and Red were available here.

There is practically no difference between the two devices when it comes to the displays. Only the maximum possible size of the glass front can be increased with the iPhone 14. Otherwise, both devices offer a 6.1-inch OLED display that offers HDR support, 800 nits of brightness and HDR. The iPhone 14 Plus comes in a mighty 6.7 inches, which could make it interesting for movie and series lovers.

Battery power and performance

As usual, a new iPhone also means new chipsets from Apple. But not this time: Instead of a completely new chip, Apple is staying true to the A15 Bionic series for another year, even if it’s not exactly the same chips that were installed in the iPhone 13. Instead, they are the chips from the iPhone 13 Pro models, with which Apple promises a performance increase of about 18 percent over a conventional 13 device.

The iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, on the other hand, come with a brand new Apple A16 bionic chip. The manufacturer’s two luxury versions promise even better cell phone performance when it comes to gaming or image and video editing. Still, the A15 chip remains a viable alternative if you’re not comfortable with the Pro or Pro Max model.

A minimal but not insignificant improvement can also be found in the battery performance of the new iPhone 14. Compared to the 13 series, it lasts around an hour longer when watching videos and around five hours longer when listening to music. Starting with the Plus version of the iPhone 14, these values increase again by quite a bit: According to the manufacturer, 26 hours of video playback, 20 hours of streamed videos and around 100 hours of listening to music is child’s play.

camera

One of the major upgrades in the iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 14 duel can be found in the camera of the new Apple phone. A 12 megapixel lens is still used here, but this time the main sensor is much larger at 1.9 micrometers and the faster ƒ/1.5 aperture and the sensor-shift image stabilization are also impressive.

These improvements should result in stronger photo and video recordings that offer more detail and less noise. Night mode has also been improved with twice the shutter speed, as has low-light performance.

Thanks to TrueDepth technology, the same applies to the front camera, which comes with a ƒ/1.9 aperture. The iPhone 14 models also offer autofocus for the smartphone’s front camera for the first time. The new Action mode also ensures that recordings you take with your iPhone 14 on the go are better stabilized.
