Apple’s new iPhones – are they rather boring or actually quite exciting? Spirits are divided on social media, even Steve Jobs’ daughter Eve meanwhile blasphemed on Instagram about the missing innovations in the iPhone 14. Nevertheless, a look at the specs shows that a lot has happened in many places. An overview.
What’s new in the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus
Storage: All iPhone 14 models, whether Pro or not, will come with 6 GB of RAM in the future. This may not sound like much in the Android world, but it is a useful innovation for the traditionally memory-efficient Apple smartphones. Whether LPDDR5 is used is still unclear.
Brighter Flash: In the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, Apple has installed a flash that is twice as bright on the back, which complements the roughly two and a half times improved light output of the main and ultra wide-angle cameras.
Big battery: The iPhone 14 Plus – which, by the way, will be the last of the new models to be released on October 7th – comes with 4325 mAh and thus with a slightly larger battery than the iPhone 14 Pro Max (4323 mAh). However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max from 2021 is further ahead with 4352 mAh.
Auto focus for selfies: In addition to the rear cameras from the iPhone 13 Pro, there is now an autofocus front camera. This should optimize many selfies and also improve the portrait effect with depth of field.
Chips from the iPhone 13 Pro: iPhone 14 and 14 Plus inherit the A15 Bionic from the previous Pro version. The SoC runs a bit faster and has one more GPU core. It is also conceivable that the hardware gets less warm in high-end applications such as games.
What’s new in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max
Always-on display: Apple is installing a permanently active screen in the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max for the first time. This should not have a negative effect on the battery life, the display can be scaled down to 1 Hertz. Important information such as time, weather or incoming notifications are just as visible as dimmed background images. Apple wants to preserve their color profile.
More brightness: Apple’s displays built into the 14 Pro models are brighter. They now reach 1600 candela “Peak Brightness” in HDR playback, outdoors it is up to 2000 candelas. The displays use LTPO technology and display Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG.
Radio not improved: The new US iPhone models do not offer any new mmWave spectra, and it still does not appear that the European versions will receive the faster 5G technology. However, it is hardly developed in this country. Even with WLAN, it remains with Wi-Fi 6, Apple has been holding back the newer Wi-Fi 6E so far.
Dynamic touchable: Apple regards the dynamic island as a touch surface, even if the selfie camera and TrueDepth module are hidden behind it. The group achieves this by reading the pixels above and between the sensors, as the first hands-on films show.
48 megapixel camera: The main rear camera quadruples its pixels. The brightness of the flash has also been doubled on the Pro models.
More little things
Cinema mode: The Cinematic Mode, which allows you to focus on different people (and animals), has been optimized. It can now achieve up to 4K HDR at 24 or 30 fps and is said to look more natural.
Satellites and Accident Detection: Apple treats all four models to the new accident detection and satellite radio for emergency calls. However, the latter only works in the USA and Canada – so far.
New start sound: Apple has its new iPhone 14 models missed a start sound for the first time. This serves in particular to help the visually impaired to recognize that their device has started.
