When manufacturing its own products, Apple relies on numerous supplier companies that manufacture the components for iPhones, iPads, Macs and the like. The Chinese display manufacturer Beijing Oriental Electronics (BOE), among others, is used in the production of the current iPhone 13 generation.

The company could now lose a bulk order of 30 million iPhone 14 display orders after reportedly changing the design of the iPhone 13 display. The aim is to increase the production of error-free products and reduce rejects. That reports The Elec.

“The company was caught changing the circuit width of the thin film transistors on the OLED panels it made for the iPhone 13 earlier this year […]. This was done without Apple’s consent, likely to increase yield […]. BOE was therefore unable to receive any orders from Cupertino for OLED panels for the iPhone 14 series […]. The Chinese display maker sent a senior executive and staff to Apple headquarters after the incident to explain why they changed the circuit width of the transistors.”

Apple commissioned BOE to manufacture iPhone 13 displays in October 2021. The agreement was now put on hold earlier this month. According to The Elec, BOE had already asked Apple to approve the production of OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone 14, but “they did not receive a clear answer from Apple”. It is almost impossible that BOE will receive another production order after such an incident.

Since Apple will probably present the new iPhone 14 generation in September of this year, the production of the iPhone 14 displays must start accordingly soon. According to The Elec, this should be the case as early as next month. Instead of BOE, the 30 million order could be split between the two main suppliers Samsung and LG. Samsung would then be responsible for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models, LG for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
