Apple leaves the release of its new iPhone as usual, do not look at the cards and thus fuel speculation. How much is the supply chain crisis affecting the price? What hardware can customers expect? And, at least as important for Apple fans: How is the design changing?
All of this should be clarified at an event soon, but there are currently only rumors about the date of the Apple keynote. What is known about the iPhone 14 so far.
Speculations about the hardware
A number of industry sites and forums consider it fairly certain that Apple will do without a mini version of its iPhone and instead rely on larger displays. Observers assume that four variants of the new iPhone will be announced:
- iPhone 14 with 6.1 inch screen diagonal
- iPhone 14 Pro 6.1 inch
- iPhone 14 Max 6.7 inch
- iPhone 14 Pro Max also with 6.7 inches
For the displays, Apple will Samsung and LG supplies like that Korean industry website “The Elec” want to know. Samsung is therefore relying on a new generation of displays for the higher-priced models.
There are other rumors about the processors that will be used in the iPhone 14. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted back in March that the iPhone 14 and 14 Max will not get a new chip, but the A15 chip built into the iPhone 13. Only the two Pro models would get a new A16 processor.
In addition, all four models should be equipped with 6 GB of RAM. The difference is that the Pro models have LPDDR5 instead of LPDDR4 technology.
Of the “Macworld” author Jason Cross speculates based on the performance leaps from one iPhone generation to the next, that an increase in performance of up to 15 percent can be expected for the Pro models with the A16 chip. However, not the longed-for 4-nanometer, but rather 5-nanometer technology should be used.
Is there a new camera and a new display?
There are also rumors about a significantly improved front and wide-angle camera. Both could be 48-megapixel versions, which might open the door to 8K video, but then also need more processing power. The fact that Apple also plans to install a periscope camera with optical zoom in its devices is considered certain by some observers, but it is unclear whether the hardware update will be installed in 2022 or only from 2023.
On the other hand, there is more clarity in Always On Display Feature (AOD) to prevail, which is eagerly awaited by many iPhone users. During the beta phase of Apple’s new operating system iOS 16, which is expected together with the iPhone 14, discovered “9to5Mac” recently that new backgrounds should already be suitable for the function. The feature will probably be reserved exclusively for the iPhone 14, according to “Bloomberg” even just the Pro models.
This is how much the iPhone 14 should cost
Visually, the shape of the iPhone 14 will probably differ only slightly from its predecessor, but the display may get a new look. Previously, there was a notch in the middle of the top edge of the iPhone 13 screen, where things like the front camera and everything for using Face ID are located.
The screen of the Pro variants should instead have two so-called punchholes in the future – a pill-shaped one for the Face ID technology and a round one for the front camera, such as the one Apple experts report from “Macworld”.. Meanwhile, the camera module on the back is said to be slightly larger than that of the iPhone 13.
The extent to which the semiconductor and supply chain crisis will affect the price of the iPhone 14 series also gives rise to speculation. The industry portal “CNET” assumes sothat the starting price should be $799 in the US, like the iPhone 12 and 13. It is still unclear whether the further pricing will be based on the iPhone 13 or whether higher prices can be expected for the Pro models. There is speculation of up to $1,799 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The most expensive version of the iPhone 13 series is $1,599 in the US.
The Apple fall keynotes usually take place in September, with the official announcement usually just before that. The rumors range from the 6th to the 13th to the 23rd of September. What is certain is that the presentation will again be a purely digital event without an audience. The new smartphones are usually available the following week.
