All iPhone 14 models could get a new front camera, which has advantages but is also more expensive.

Apple is planning numerous upgrades for the iPhone 14 over the previous generation. According to new rumours, the upcoming models will now also have a new front camera, which will bring a new feature and, thanks to a larger aperture, will ensure better selfies. However, it should be far more expensive than the camera of the previous model.

The Korean Magazine Korean IT News reports that Apple will use LG Innotek front cameras for the iPhone 14. The collaboration was apparently only planned for the iPhone 15. Now Apple would like to use the LG cameras in the 14 model. According to the report, the Chinese manufacturer from whom Apple actually wanted to buy the cameras had quality problems.

LG Innotek has already started mass producing the cameras as the iPhone 14 is due out later this year, probably in September. The change of manufacturer has consequences for quality and price. The new front camera is said to cost around three times as much as that of the iPhone 13.

New front camera with better quality

However, the iPhone 14 also takes better pictures with the new front camera. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo talked about the iPhone’s new front camera back in early May MacRumors reported. Accordingly, all four models should get the camera donated. These are: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Two features in particular suggest that you can take better pictures with the new selfie camera can shoot. For the first time, this gets an autofocus and a larger f/1.9 aperture, previously it was an f/2.2 aperture. The larger aperture lets more light onto the sensor. This is particularly useful for images taken in poor light conditions.

Who pays the costs?

Whether or to what extent Apple will pass on the increased costs for the new front camera to customers is not yet known. We don’t know how much the camera costs in total and Apple hasn’t published the final prices for the iPhone models yet. However, it is quite possible that Apple will increase the prices of the smartphones due to the increased costs.
