  • Apparently older iPhones can also use the always-on display.
  • This revealed a bug in the iOS 16 beta.
  • Nevertheless, Apple only wants to make these available for the new iPhone 14.

Apple is currently working on the iPhone 14 and iOS 16. One of the biggest innovations is likely to be that Apple will finally make use of the Always-On-Display (AOD) function.

With most top smartphones, it is already standard for displays to switch to always-on mode as soon as the device is not actively used. Meanwhile, throttling the refresh rate reduces power consumption while still showing the time and other information from the lock screen.

Older iPhones can also use AOD

Apple used to be one of the few manufacturers not to equip their cell phones with this function. That should change with the iPhone 14. Unfortunately, the feature is exclusive to the new model, although older smartphones appear to have the technology to do so.

A bug in the iOS 16 beta revealed that all iPhones from iPhone X onwards have the technical requirements for the AOD function. A Twitter user was able to use it on his iPhone X, although that shouldn’t be possible.

The reason for this is probably a bug, which other users have also encountered. This probably occurs when the smartphone is charged overnight and then used for the first time the next morning.

Why is only the iPhone 14 getting the AOD feature?

It is not known why Apple withholds the feature from older models, but there are probably two reasons for this. On the one hand, Apple wants to use the always-on display as a selling point for the iPhone 14, on the other hand, power consumption could also play a role.

The iPhone 14 should be able to operate the display at only 1 Hertz, which minimizes power consumption. Older models have a higher minimum refresh rate and would consume correspondingly more power in AOD mode.
