Will the iPhone 14 be a disappointment? In order to distinguish the standard model from the Pro variants, Apple will cut some features, they say. A new report is fueling that speculation.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman is considered one of the most reliable Apple oracles ever. In his PowerOn newsletter he now shares his predictions for the iPhone 14 series with us. One focus is on the question of how Apple will differentiate the individual models from each other. Among other things, the manufacturer should only install its new A16 chip in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. The standard model, on the other hand, will receive the previous year’s drive – possibly in an optimized version. Sounds a bit like iPhone 13s to us. Apple used to use the s suffix to identify mobile phones that differed only slightly from their predecessors.

iPhone 14 with old chip – why?

The differentiation from the Pro model is apparently the main reason why Apple will not equip the iPhone 14 with its best chipset, but not the only one. According to Gurman, the ongoing global chip shortage probably also played a role in the decision. In addition, with the iPhone 14 you will probably have to do without a few other features that the Pro models are supposed to boast of.

This includes the long-awaited 48 MP camera that will be used on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. The standard model, on the other hand, remains with the maximum resolution of 12 MP, which Apple has stuck to for years. That doesn’t rule out that the camera is better than the iPhone 13 (with a contract here). However, the upgrade will probably not be as big as it could have been.

That’s why “iPhone 13s” would be justified

According to rumors, one of the most important features in our opinion could also be missing from the iPhone 14: After it was temporarily said that the standard model would also have a 120 Hz display, it doesn’t look like it at the moment. Should “ProMotion” remain Pro-exclusive in 2022, that would be a big disappointment.

Because displays with a high frame rate are now standard even in cheaper devices. It was hard to get over the fact that Apple did without the iPhone 13 (test here). There really is no excuse for it this year. Even if the displays are said to be small: An iPhone 14 without a 120 Hz display would not have earned its name – and should therefore be called the iPhone 13s.
