This week, chipmaker Qualcomm unveiled its latest processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, along with the platform to go with it presented. According to Qualcomm, this should “revolutionize flagship smartphones” through “groundbreaking” experiences. The new chip is expected to be used in Android flagship devices later this year.

However, initial benchmark tests are already indicating that the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 cannot compete with Apple’s in-house A16 Bionic chip. The A16 is currently installed in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. The team at MacRumors (https://www.macrumors.com/2022/11/17/iphone-14-pro-a16-outpreforms-snapdragon/) reports, citing DealNTech data:

“While the latest chip won’t officially ship in smartphones for a few months, Geekbench results for the chip have already been spotted in an as yet unreleased Android phone. According to the results, the latest Snapdragon 8 chip scored 1483 points in single-core and 4709 points in multi-core. The A16 Bionic scored 1874 points in single-core mode and 5372 points in multi-core mode. For comparison, the A15 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 13 Pro and the more affordable iPhone 14 models also scored higher than Qualcomm’s latest chip, at 1709 versus 1483 in single-core mode.”

The second generation of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 processor is said to have 35 percent higher CPU and 25 percent higher GPU performance than its predecessor, as well as improved energy efficiency. As early as 2020, Apple’s A14 Bionic and even the A13 Bionic from the year before it beat Qualcomm’s then current Snapdragon 888 model, which has been built into Android smartphones since last year.

Both the Apple A16 Bionic and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are manufactured using TSMC’s 4-nanometer process. Apparently, Apple is still ahead in terms of processor technology. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior voice president of worldwide marketing, said during the iPhone keynote this September, “The competition is still working to catch up on the performance of the A13 that we introduced with the iPhone 11 three years ago.”
