More power for Pro models?
In all likelihood, Apple will again declare two variants of the iPhone as Pro devices this year and give these models exclusive functions. This also includes the often rumored always-on display: Selected information can be displayed continuously on the newly designed iOS 16 lock screen; conceivable are the time, the date and some widgets. According to Gurman, the Pro versions get a larger battery, so the devices make a “slightly larger overall” impression. The Bloomberg journalist does not give more precise dates. Apple probably decides to take this step to accommodate the always-on screen. Rumors of larger battery capacities have been circulating for a few months, but leaker ShrimpApplePro, for example, claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro Max will have a slightly smaller battery compared to the current top model (see here).
The focus should be on eSIM
According to Gurman, Apple is also considering removing the SIM card tray from some devices. This development may already affect some iPhone 14 models, otherwise Cupertino will only implement this step with the next generation. This time, the US group wants to focus more on the eSIM: This time network operators will increasingly point out the possibility of the eSIM to their customers, according to Gurman. As early as July, GlobalData analyst Emma Mohr-McClune pointed out iPhone variants without a slot for a physical card (see here). Apple could perhaps do without connections entirely on the iPhone 15.
