The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max offer the most significant redesign of the screen since the iPhone X. With the Dynamic Island, Apple is bringing an optical and software-related innovation to the market. A more advanced production method was required to achieve the pill-shaped cut-out at the top. A report from The Elec now shows how Samsung introduced a new production technique for Apple to protect the display from possible damage and loss of picture quality.

New production method for iPhone 14 Pro displays

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are the first iPhones to have a cutout directly in the display. The Elec explains that Apple has asked Samsung to use more advanced production processes when manufacturing its high-end iPhone displays to create the new Dynamic Island while protecting the surrounding OLED panel.

In order to create the new cutout in the display, Samsung has to drill the pill-shaped hole directly into the OLED panel. There is a risk that the surrounding pixels will be damaged and in this case exposed to moisture and oxygen. According to the report, to prevent this, Samsung has designed a protective layer that separates the pill-shaped cutout from the surrounding pixels.

Samsung has extensive experience in making displays, including those with cutouts. The company’s own range of smartphones has what is known as punch-hole displays, which house the front camera. However, The Elec suggests that Apple took extra care in producing the displays for the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) and Samsung had to take special precautions as a result.

The aim was to ensure that the cutout did not affect the surrounding pixels and did not degrade the image quality. According to the report, LG Display, Apple’s other display supplier, has adopted the same production method for its iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max displays.
