If the most important factor when choosing a cell phone is cell speed, then in the US, UK and Germany there is only one choice: the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). This emerges from a report by Ookla, a company that specializes in network diagnostics and developed the popular Speedtest benchmark. In other countries, however, the iPhone is not always at the top, in China it even falls short of the top five.
Not so fast in Japan and China
Ookla tested the 5G performance of various phones in ten countries with the highest number of connected devices, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max was the top performer in the US, UK and Germany. It achieved an average download speed of 177.21 Mbps in the US and 171.24 Mbps in the UK. The iPhone 14 Pro was not far behind its larger sibling, with average download speeds of 175.08 Mbps in the US and 158.24 Mbps in the UK.
In Germany, for example, the iPhone 14 Pro shines with a value of 181 Mbps for download and 30.28 Mbps for upload, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max running in just behind. Last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max took third and fourth place, with the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G completing the top five. In the UK, the five fastest smartphones are all from Apple, in the USA the two 14 Pro are followed by three devices from Samsung.
In other parts of the world there is competition, sometimes with impressive rates. In Japan, for example, the iPhone 14 Pro Max only managed fifth place (164 Mbps/15 Mbps), the Sony Xperia is ahead with 225 Mbps (download and 10 Mbps upload). And in China, iPhones are completely missing from the list, the domestic brands OnePlus and Huawei achieve downloads of up to 350 Mbps and uploads of around 50 Mbps with their devices.

A question of the modem chip – and the network operator
The iPhone 14 Pro uses the same Snapdragon X65 5G modem as most premium Android smartphones and will likely continue to work with Qualcomm for at least a year. However, there are persistent rumors that Apple is working on its own 5G modem, which may not be ready until 2025.
Ookla used its Speedtest Intelligence metricsto measure the 5G performance of handsets that had a “market share of at least 0.5% of all devices and a minimum sample size of 100 devices in a given market”. Testing was conducted using the available 5G carriers in each country, and Ookla notes that performance may vary from country to country.
