The fastest 5G smartphone

The new study by the Speedtest experts is based on data from the third quarter. The analysis examines the five fastest popular 5G devices in a given country. To be considered, a device had to have a market share of at least 0.5% of all devices and a minimum sample size of 100 devices in a given market. The investigation included random samples for each 5G provider. This means performance will most likely vary from network to network.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max was the fastest 5G device in the US during the study period with an average download speed of 177.21 Mbit/s, the iPhone 14 Pro came in second with 175.08 Mbit/s. Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones took third to fifth place with speeds between 137 and 162.5 Mbit/s.

Ookla writes about the 5G performance in Germany:

“German iPhone users have a clear mission: upgrade your smartphone! In Q3 2022, Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max achieved the fastest average 5G download speeds among popular 5G devices in Germany, at 181.09 Mbps and 177.98 Mbps, respectively. It was followed by the iPhone 13 Pro (148.87 Mbps) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (148.08 Mbps), then the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G at 140.93 Mbps.”

Unsurprisingly, the Qualcomm X65 modem in the iPhone 14 Pro enables faster 5G download speeds than the X60 chip in the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. In addition, the new A16 chip is considered a factor in the faster performance. Next year, all four iPhone 15 models are expected to come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X70 modem, announced in February. Like the Snapdragon X65 modem, the X70 chip theoretically supports download speeds of up to 10Gbps, with newly added artificial intelligence capabilities for faster average speeds, improved coverage, better signal quality, lower latency, and up to a 60 percent improvement energy efficiency.
