Under the term “ProMotion” Apple markets a technology that enables variable refresh rates of up to 120 Hertz. While some users hardly notice any difference in the daily use of compatible devices, for others the feature represents a significant gain in user experience. ProMotion is now represented on many of the company’s device types – but the function only found its way onto the iPhone with the current generation and is only reserved for the Pro models. Anyone who owns an iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max will enjoy, among other things, buttery smooth scrolling: the “Super Retina XDR Display” refreshes the image 10 to 120 times per second. In this way, the panel takes into account the different application scenarios – and reduces the frequency if necessary in order to save more energy. However, the displays built into the iPhones are not able to display refresh rates of less than 10 Hertz, as is sometimes possible with the competition. This relies on so-called LTPO panels, such as those used in the Apple Watch Series 7. It is still unclear whether the upcoming iPhone series will also be equipped with such screens. Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, assumes so.
Always-on displays for iPhone 14 Pro (Max)?
When asked, Young explains in a post that is short even by Twitter standards, that he cannot confirm such panels, but expects them. Depending on Apple’s approach, this would be accompanied by advantages for the user: For the first time, an iPhone could have an always-on display and display selected information such as reception bar, time or the number of unread messages permanently on the panel. Longer battery life is also conceivable. However, there were corresponding rumors in the run-up to the launch of the iPhone 13: Mark Gurman, whose forecasts are usually very accurate, indicated the feature as early as July 2021 (see here).
