With the release of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple introduced an always-on display for the first time. And even though Apple has worked to minimize the energy consumption of the always-on display, the activated feature is at the expense of the battery. A recently published, very interesting YouTube video from the channel SimplyPops shows how much this is the case.

In his test, the YouTuber used a total of three different iPhone 14 Pro devices, which were charged to a full 100 percent before the test. One of the iPhones had the always-on display completely deactivated, another used a black wallpaper for as little color and contrast display as possible, and the third used a normal always-on wallpaper. After removing the charging cable, a stopwatch was started to record the standby times. The battery widget was also shown on the iPhones with the always-on display enabled to clarify the process.

YouTuber SimplyPops used a time-lapse function so that the YouTube video would not become endlessly long. It turned out that the iPhone 14 Pro lasted 59 hours in standby mode with the always-on display enabled by default. The model with the black always-on wallpaper was already 70 hours. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro with the always-on display turned off still had 70 percent battery remaining when the example with the black always-on wallpaper turned off after 70 hours of standby.

No laboratory conditions in the YouTube test

However, the test was apparently not carried out under laboratory conditions: Several push notifications popped up in the test device with a black always-on wallpaper, but this was not the case with the other two iPhone 14 Pros. However, this fact should not have changed much in terms of the battery or standby time of the device, and the demonstration is definitely sufficient to clarify the differences.

A direct comparison shows that the iPhone 14 Pro with a deactivated always-on display still has around 75 percent of the remaining battery when the example with the activated function and colored wallpaper gave up the ghost after 59 hours. If you depend on a long battery life with your new iPhone to get through the day, it can definitely help to switch off the always-on display or at least switch to a black wallpaper. Turning the iPhone over to the display side also deactivates the always-on display. So you can achieve significantly longer operating times.
