The first rumors about the new iPhone 14 flared up in early September 2021. There are already first leaks about a new design, the elimination of the notch or the Lightning connector. Now the camera is in the sights of the rumor collectors. Accordingly, one of the most eagerly awaited iPhone features should not appear in next year’s models.
Well-connected Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple intends to equip the iPhone 14 with a 48-megapixel rear camera and not add a periscope lens to the iPhone 15 until 2023. In other words, we’ll have to wait for the good superzoom feature. Kuo didn’t provide any further details, but he has previously claimed that the 48-megapixel camera will be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro models and will enable recording of 8K videos instead of the previous 4K. These high-resolution 8K videos are suitable for viewing on Apple’s AR/VR headset, which is expected to be released next year. In a report by TF International Securities, the English-language website MacRumors Kuo said these iPhone camera upgrades should help Apple supplier and Taiwanese manufacturer Largan Precision grow its market share, sales and profits over the next two years.
Kuo also claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro will introduce pixel binning to support both 48MP and 12MP resolutions. Pixel binning is already used on some Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, where the camera combines several adjacent pixels into one, reducing the risk of blurry images. Also, Kuo is convinced that at least one iPhone 15 model in 2023 will get a periscope lens, paving the way for a much larger optical zoom. For example, the Huawei P40 Pro+ features a periscope lens with up to 10x optical zoom, while the iPhone 13 Pro models are limited to 3x optical zoom.
