The satellite then relays the message to one of the base stations on Earth that have been set up around the globe. This base station then sends the emergency call to an emergency call center, which can send help. Apart from emergency calls, the iPhone 14 also offers the option of sharing your location with friends via a satellite signal.
Apple says it has invested $450 million to build the infrastructure required for this feature, with most of the investment going directly to Globalstar. Among other things, this budget was used to develop new high-performance antennas, which were installed in all Globalstar base stations in order to improve the reliability and coverage of the satellite network. New satellites will soon be launched for this purpose.
