Iphone 14 | iPhone 14 with you on ski vacation? This feature brings you in need of explanation | apple iphone

With the iPhone 14 Apple introduced an accident detection system that is supposed to save lives – and it probably has already done so. The fact that the practical feature can also cause inconvenience is shown by increasing reports from ski areas.

The function by Apple simply called “accident detection”, recognizes falls, car accidents or the like and then starts a countdown. If this is not interrupted by the user, the iPhone will make an emergency call including the coordinates. A life-saving feature that doesn’t really fit into a ski holiday: Several authorities around the world are reporting a noticeable increase in false alarms in ski areas.

Japan’s fire and disaster control agency is sounding the alarm

Anyone who has ever skied or snowboarded knows it’s usually pretty cold. So let’s all dress up nice and warm. The smartphone disappears under several layers of textile and is only dug out for the proud selfie in the sun in a quiet minute. Now imagine the surprise: The iPhone 14 recognized an accident and made an emergency call – but the countdown could not be heard through the thick jacket.

Something like this has probably happened to a few people around the world in the last few weeks. This is what Japan’s fire and disaster control agency states, for example: From December 16, 2022 to January 23, 2023, the fire brigade of the Japanese Alps received a total of 919 emergency calls – 134 of them were accidentally made by a iPhone delivered with accident detection.

The fire brigade in the Japanese city of Gujo draws an even more drastic picture: Between January 1st and 23rd there were 351 emergency calls, of which 135 were incorrectly made by the accident detection system. Other regions, such as Utah or Colorado, are said to report similar statistics.

A false alarm not only causes unnecessary costs, but can also mean that emergency services are suddenly absent elsewhere. We still want do not under any circumstances advise disabling crash detection – even if that is possible. Because the function can be life-saving, especially on a skiing holiday.

These iPhones support accident detection

As already indicated, not all iPhones offer automatic accident detection. You need to activate the function an iPhone from the current iPhone 14 series. Upcoming models from Apple, such as this iPhone 15should also have the function on board.

If you want to make an emergency call quickly with an older iPhone, you stay the “emergency call SOS” function: If you hold down the power button and a volume button, the “Emergency SOS” slider appears after a few seconds. Now either keep it pressed or drag the controller to the right. The emergency call is then made.

Apple has expanded this function with the iPhone 14 and a signal by satellite integrated. In this way, the iPhone can also call for help in remote regions without cell phone reception.
